Small Bites: Weekly Reading List (Issue No. 1)

A thing about me: I read articles on a daily basis like I'm near literary starvation. I don't seek out a particular source – I look at the content that collects on my Twitter timeline and go from there. Some frequent players are The Cut, New York Post, T Magazine, New York Times, Racked, and The Pool. Since this habit is as common as me eating breakfast or making my daily cup(s) of coffee, I've decided to create a weekly post with my favorite articles I come across during the week. So with that said, here's the first installment of "Small Bites."

1. "What Joan Didion Means to Me" by Emma Roberts.
As someone who has lived in Tennessee, Massachusetts, Maryland, the U.S. Virgin Islands, North Carolina, Georgia, Kansas, Missouri, and NYC I find the question "Where are you from?" to be almost impossible to answer without launching into my backstory, which is exhausting for both me and the listener. Emma notes how despite an equally untethered childhood she found a city that feels most like "home" in an unexpected place.

2. "Do We Need to be Better At Breaking Up With Friends?" by Caroline O'Donoghue.
A friend I've had for more than 12 years and I have been on the outs. Nothing "happened" per se, but 2016 was a year of profound personal crisis that forced me to recognize the most important people in my life. (See: "You Seem Fine") Although, weariness in this friendship has been persistent since we met, I found myself willing to take longer to return phone calls and texts I eventually decided I was okay with letting this friendship go. And why? This article explains a small part of it.

3. How 'Girls' Breaks the Rules of Traditional Friendship Comedy
I've yet to watch Girls (I'll get there) but life is not Sex & the City 24/7. Sure there are cosmos and unforgettable late nights that turn into mornings and laughter over overpriced brunch entrees but people change, move, and friendships end. It's nice to see the not-so-fun times represented along with the better ones.

4. What 25 Famous Women Wore to Their Birthday
​I'll admit I'm a pretty avid purveyor of pop culture but there's something universally relatable to women here. As much time as I've spent in my own closet trying to plan the "perfect look" – especially on my birthday, it's fun to see how everyone from Lindsay Lohan to Gloria Steinem has done it.

5. Candace Bushnell on How 'Sex and the City' Really Began
I bought a copy of Sex & The City during my freshman year of college in the overpriced campus bookstore, literally 5 years ago. It had been relegated to a box in the basement of my parents' house sometime after graduation in 2015. When I was home recently, I saw that my mom had it on the shelf and I decided to bring it back to New York with me. Last night, I opened it for the first time and did a quick search for "Candace Bushnell" and "The real Mr. Big" when this article popped up. Seriously, I start reading SATC the day the author is back in the news?
